Echo Henge 2007
August 3-5
A weekend mini-festival celebrating
Lughnasadh,
Plan your high day now!
The Lughnasadh festival was begun by the god Lugh, as a funeral feast and games commemorating his foster-mother, Tailtiu, who died of exhaustion after clearing the plains of Ireland for agriculture. Hallowed Oaks Grove loves Lughnasadh and our grove has made it bigger and bigger every year. We have worked to raise the bar, incorporating a 'state fair' kind of atmosphere to try to recreate the pagan High Days of old. Somewhere along the way this year we decided we were going to have a band. We then realized that this whole thing was just too far over the top and we should extend an invitation to others, thus Echo Henge was born...
We view a High Day as more than just a ritual. ADF rituals are rituals of sacrifice. In the Lughnasadh games, your competition is the sacrifice and there is some event or another that everyone can compete in. We have games of strength, games of skill, bardic competitions, baking competitions and brewing competitions as well as gambling for charity. The whole weekend is full of activities and it's one big ritual.
This is how we are going to organize it. Friday night is the gathering. In the old days people came from near and far to compete in honor of the gods. We will gather our people and open the ritual. When we get to the section where we sacrifice....Let the Games Begin! Pagan warriors loved gambling so we will start there. If you want to compete bring contact info for the charity that you want to play for and a $10 buy in fee. Winner takes all. Fires will be lit and and we will have quite a celebration into the night. Saturday morning the games will begin. Games of strength and skill run throughout the day. We will then judge the baking and brewing competitions and close the ritual. The bardic competition will be held during the potluck feast. This is an improv event done in the tradition of "Whose Line Is It, Anyway." We will then award the prizes and bring out the our band to finish off the night. We like festival bands, but we decided to go a different route and bring out the hardest hitting rock band that we could find to blow out the night! Seance Fiction is headed up by a Norse Heathen and performs a variety of Hard Rock, Industrial and Heavy Metal. What would Erik the Red listen to?
If you don't already have a place to celebrate Lughnasadh, then you do now! The event will take place in Eva, AL. Primitive camping accomodations are available. Sorry, we don't have facilities for RV's or campers. Entry will be $15 and will be payable through Paypal, either through a Paypal account or a credit card. Not all details have been finalized, so email us and we will send you the details as they appear.
Hope to see you there!
